MEET YOUR GUIDE IN THE PATH TO FOOD FREEDOM:
NATALIE FORSYTHE, CERTIFIED INTUITIVE EATING COUNSELOR

Natalie Forsythe is the creator and lead teacher of the Path to Food Freedom educational community. She’s dedicated to helping women+ to embrace their personal power while learning the proven tools to heal their food relationships.

Natalie’s journey to finding freedom in her food relationship has been life long. She can remember spooning brown sugar as a three year old. She started her first diet by fourteen. By the time she left high school, she was struggling with full blown bulimia. She felt totally out of control.

For the last five years of her decade long struggle, she looked for help. During this time Natalie tried just about everything: from nutritionists to therapy, restrictive diets, personal trainers, to just plain trying harder. She found that while some things helped, the treatment options for disordered eating were seriously lacking. There wasn’t holistic support from someone who really got it.

After Natalie’s recovery, she had an epiphany that she wanted to help other people find the freedom she had found. She compiled everything that she had wanted in a healing program from tactical hands-on tips, to tools steeped in Intuitive Eating and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. She saw how important community was, and she saw the impacts of connecting with her body every single day.

Her life’s work has become dedicated to lifting the deep seeded shame around disordered eating and helping women+ step into bigger, bolder lives. After graduating Natalie's program, Alumni have found they are no longer focused on food with nearly all of their mental energy, and with freed up energy they've gone on to launch podcasts, start businesses, play music, start dating, start businesses, save money, joyfully be with kids, visit friends and take vacations.

Natalie is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and earned her Bachelor's in Psychology from Marlboro College. She is certified by The Coaches Training Institute as a Certified Co-Active Coach and by the International Coaching Federation as a Professional Certified Coach. She currently is earning a Certificate in Eating and Weight Disorders from UC Berkeley.

WHAT STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT
THE PATH TO FOOD FREEDOM

"My relationship with food was very dysfunctional. I spent a lot of time obsessing about food, eating too much food and feeling a lot of guilt and shame. Constantly judging myself with negative thought patterns was probably the worst part.

One of the biggest things I learned was how many people struggling with food are perfectionist overachiever type personalities. [I realized how] being a perfectionist was not really serving me. Everything that I learned in [Natalie’s] class has been immediately something that is applicable to my life.

Before Natalie's class I was feeling like my eating was out of control on a daily basis. Now that I've been in the course for five months I haven't binged. I feel like my out of control eating is a thing of the past.

I feel like the money that I spent on Natalie's course was the best money I've ever spent. My husband said it was money well spent because he noticed such a big difference in me by the second or third module."

-Misty, Texas. Teacher

"I had gastric bypass and thought it would be the answer to everything.  I didn’t realize the emotional reasons why I ate.  After the surgery, I realized why I was eating. What I discovered was I started gaining weight and I felt like a failure. I started sneak eating. I was thinking about food constantly. One of my biggest struggles was Last Supper mentality.

From where I was then to now, it is a huge change. I was constantly thinking about food. Now, it’s not like that. The hiding behaviors have dropped away.  Now, I eat when I’m hungry and move on. It’s just life now."

-Tania, six months into the program

My daily existence was finding ways to isolate with food and TV and being very ashamed of my body dreaming about what it would be like to lose weight. Food was my greatest comfort but at the same time the enemy because it made me feel self-conscious in society because I had this bigger body. Food was also my primary comfort of how to survive in the world.

I'm so much easier on myself than I ever have been in my entire life. I have a sincere understanding that I am not alone in the struggle and it is something that's evolving every single day. I have acceptance that this is something that is with me every single day and that I have the tools to deal with it.

I always felt lighter and more love in the world after seeing [Natalie]. The most valuable part of the program for me was the acceptance. My relationship with food these days is much more peaceful."

-Daniela, California, Actor

"I was either dieting or I was bingeing. Now, I don’t feel anxious around food anymore.  I enjoy food now. It is a huge difference. I sleep in the night instead of eat. I feel good with myself and in my body.  I feel free.

Before, I was scared to pass by the cashier and grab all the candy and binge in the car. Now, I am free in the cashier’s aisle. I don’t want it it anymore. "

- Joanna, five months into the program

"I struggled with food all of my adult life.  It was such a secret. I couldn't tell anybody about it. On the surface I was doing all the things I was supposed to be doing and nobody knew. It was just awful.

Working with Natalie was the first time I got a glimmer that it really wasn't about the weight or the food, I think it was the first time that I really found myself. Weekly contact with [Natalie created] a shift in perspective- the obsession was loosening its grip.

Now I’m in a good place.  I don’t have to binge because I can eat what I want when I want it. Wish I didn't have to wait 50 years to learn this but I’m really grateful that I’m here now. My weight’s been pretty stable since we stopped working together. I go to my closet and my clothes fit. I don’t stress about it. It’s just kind of settled.

This past year has been hard, horrible bad awful things have happened, but food is not my coping mechanism anymore. I’m OK."

-Maria, Maryland, Psychologist

"I had awareness that I was eating my head off, but no awareness of how to stop. I knew I was emotionally eating, but I didn’t know that I could ever stop.

Natalie's teachings are amazing. Very thought provoking. Clear suggestions. It isn’t just about food. It’s about life. It is helping in all areas of my life. It is unbelievable. It is so exciting.  It’s a big wow.

It was a struggle. I knew for me that it was in my mind. I am an addictive person. I needed help with that addiction. Natalie is truly a godsend. This program is amazing. It is so incredibly helpful.  It is just unbelievable."

-Cheryl, four months in the community

"I described myself as an emotional eater. Any type of emotion could send me into an eating frenzy. Bingeing could be as frequent as every day.

I was four months along in the program, when all of a sudden I realized that I had had not considered food as a comfort when I had a fairly large stress in my life.

That was an aha moment for me. It was like, 'Oh well, I'm not going to eat that because that's not what I do anymore.' Food wasn't even a consideration. I didn't even think about it.

This journey was eye opening, exciting and freeing. Very freeing. I don't really think that I'm engaging in out-of-control eating at all.

You know, I don't obsess about it anymore and I don't come to it for comfort. That's not to say that I don't eat comfort foods because I do but I don't eat to try to stuff my feelings anymore."

-Michele, Alabama, Massage Therapist

WHO ARE THE MENTORS?

Mentors are graduates of the Path to Food Freedom.  They have chosen to volunteer as Mentors because the curriculum and community has been so impactful in their healing journeys. Mentors demonstrate how to implement the tools and shift behaviors over time.

Mentors receive special Mentor Coaching Calls from Natalie, to support their role as Mentors, as well as to advance their own journeys of healing.

Mentors don’t “have it all figured out.”  They aren’t “perfect.” They have good days and bad days, too. They exemplify a core tenet of the curriculum by showing their commitment to themselves and their ability to heal themselves along the inevitably bumpy path of life.

You will have the opportunity to apply to be a Mentor, after completing the curriculum.

I KNOW THIS ISN'T A WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM. BUT, WILL I LOSE WEIGHT?

Maybe. But, that really is not what this program is about.  The Path to Food Freedom is a weight neutral approach.

We are here to find freedom from the mental obsession with food and body.  We are here to heal our food relationships. Focus on weight is a part of the pendulum swing which keeps people stuck. Purposeful weight loss has been shown to result in greater weight gain for the vast majority of people.

Some people do lose weight because they lost the obsession, and learned how to listen to their bodies.  Other people lost the obsession and their bodies stayed the same, or perhaps even gained weight.

Every body is different. Depending upon where you are on the pendulum swing, and taking into account metabolic and genetic factors outside of your control, your body will find its own balance, even if it isn’t the number that you have in mind.  You will get lots of tools to help you change your mind about the importance of weight as an indicator of your health and worth.
